WINNER FOR 1997

Nothing bonds a neighbourhood together more than a constant concern for the well-being of its children. Vigilant communities sometimes have legions of local organizations and services about the business of caring for kids.

Yet these good and essential efforts could make an even greater contribution if they could be imaginatively marshaled together into one caring and compatible force that embraced its public and community service organizations in an entirely new way.

Inspired by this vision, the Kids Count organization created a new kind of cross functional partnership that would focus entirely on finding new and manageable methods to help neighbourhoods to develop their own strategies for their own children's needs.

The commitment of the "partners" is clear: find new and sustainable ways to help neighbourhood children and parents do things for themselves.

The results of this innovative community-wide partnership is having a positive and parental impact on the long-term health and learning outcomes of children. It's also revealing new ways to share community resources, which often means not relying on additional money or resources to make good things happen.

Through management imagination, Kids Count has created a whole "new way of doing business" in the community business of nourishing young minds and bodies.
