The Women's Post Treatment Centre recognized a need to provide couples therapy to women in enduring and meaningful relationships who have received individual and group treatment for post-traumatic stress resulting from childhood sexual abuse.
The provision of couples therapy has not been traditionally offered in the therapeutic work offered to survivors of childhood sexual abuse. At the Women's Post Treatment Centre, the need to maintain positive changes by providing couples counselling to supplement the treatment process has been recognized. The couples therapy program is incorporated during the Integrating Stage of the Therapeutic Process.
The Program employs a family therapist who provides couples therapy for the women referred by their primary therapist at the Agency. The family therapist works within a family therapy system model recognizing that, in order for women to completely heal, their partners have to become integrated into their new lives.
The therapy promotes and supports positive changes that either member of the partnership makes and which enhances the couple relationship. The most common skills worked on are mutual problem solving and communication.
The treatment model is non-judgmental. The clients establish goals and then they and the therapist work collaboratively to achieve those goals.
