Dixon Hall's Hispanos Unidos Project addresses the needs of a growing Hispanic population within Regent Park. The key word is integration, both in terms of integrating this community into the fabric of Canadian society and in terms of integrating a community development approach to provide social service and family supports, cultural activities, economic development projects, computer and ESL (English as a Second Language ) training.
Hispanos Unidos makes use of a minimum of financial and staff resources to generate significant results. One full-time staff has developed a network of approximately 60 volunteers both from within the local community and from outside by establishing links with Spanish speaking people from the wider community.
Using a self-help community development approach, the project builds capacity from within, in addition to accessing existing services at Dixon Hall and other local agencies with the help of volunteer translators and ESL instruction.
