The Family Violence Awareness Program provides education and training opportunities to students, teachers, parents and the wider school communities on wife/woman assault and its effects on children who witness the assault.
At the outset of the program, students discussed varied forms of violence and placed values ranging from mild to extreme; these were then examined for similarities and differences. The importance of healthy relationships and dating attitudes were discussed, and the students developed their "Personal Bill of Rights".
Teacher responsibilities were to ensure the students had the resources to complete the Violence Questionnaire as well as being an important resource link for the children and the shelter worker. Students examined various styles of conflict resolution and anger management. Group activities provided opportunities to examine and practice various styles of problem solving. Cooperative games and peer support circles were a natural progression.
