The Canadian Citizenship Federation, in co-operation with a local event planning facilitator, introduced a 1995 Canadian Citizen Recognition Awards Project. The purpose of the Awards Project is to recognize Canadian citizens who had made an outstanding contribution to our society in categories not normally recognized at the national level.
For the inaugural year of the Project, the Canadian Citizen Recognition Awards recognized individuals in the following categories: Citizenship (New Citizen of the year); Policeman of the year; Nurse of the year; Librarian of the year; and the Canadian United Nations Peace Keeper of the year.
The basic criteria for each category included Canadian citizenship, providing a contribution to one's profession in the community, and providing an influence beyond the local community.
One Award recipient was selected in each of the five categories across Canada and was brought to Ottawa during the Canada Day weekend. Engraved plaques were presented to the recipients at a Gala Banquet held at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa July 1st.
