"Cries in the Dark" is an innovative approach to increasing the awareness and understanding of the impact violence has on our youth. Initiated by Arts Umbrella and the Arts Umbrella Youth Dance Company, the piece is a multi-layered collaboration with script writer Hilary Jones-Farrow, choreographers Jean-Guy Cossette and Bev Aitchison, corporate and financial supporters Arts & Entertainment Network, Rogers Cable Systems and James A. Burton, a documentary producer with Rogers Cable T.V.
"Cries in the Dark" encourages audiences, young and old, to think about the problem of violence in our society and to find solutions to counter this growing social ill.
"Cries in the Dark" was performed as a live theatre/dance piece in schools and at professional performance venues. A study guide was produced to enhance and extend the educational value of the performance. The guide contained classroom exercises teachers could use to promote further discussions and expand students' knowledge and understanding of the issues.
As a further extension of the program, Rogers Cable T.V. in Vancouver has been producing a documentary on the making of the piece to be used by the Arts & Entertainment Network's "Cable in the Classroom" program distributed to schools in Canada and the U.S.
