The BIZ with government partners launched the Downtown Watch, a 12-member street patrol and goodwill ambassador team. The program has established a highly visible security team to patrol the downtown area. Canada's only civilian, uniformed street patrol is effectively addressing concerns about safety in downtown Winnipeg.
Based at the Portage Avenue storefront Police Office, Watch members patrol downtown streets, year-round, seven days a week. Dressed in distinctive bright red tunics reminiscent of the historic North West Mounted Police uniform (and in winter, Hudson Bay blanket coats), they are equipped with satchels containing event/information brochures and first aid kits. The Watch also carry two-way radios and remain in constant communication with each other and their supervisor.
Ambassadors conduct presentations on safety awareness for organizations and groups throughout the downtown, particularly seniors groups. They also attend special events in the downtown area, providing a visible presence wherever possible.
Downtown Watch ambassadors provide assistance to people in the downtown area in cases such as traffic accidents, car problems, harassment by panhandlers and intoxicated individuals, administering first aid, and providing directions or information.
