HONOURABLE MENTION 1995

The namesake of the "Let's Talk Science" organization is the
Let's Talk Science teacher partnership program, in which university science graduate
student volunteers are paired with preschool, elementary, and secondary school teachers.
The unique method of partnering volunteers and teachers for a longer period of time (usually one to four years until a graduate student completes an M.Sc. or Ph.D. thesis) creates a special relationship between participants. The graduate student volunteer as a science mentor to the teacher. By sharing experiences in scientific research with their teacher partner and class, the graduate student can share the excitement which surrounds the process of science. The teacher becomes a mentor for teaching strategies and classroom management, and helps the graduate student to improve communication skills. It is up to the pair to work together to design a specific educational program which will best suit both participants.
Let's Talk Science outreach programs, based on Western's model, have now been established at a number of Canadian universities.
