HONOURABLE MENTION FOR 1998

The Safe Communities Foundation is a Canada-wide, registered nonprofit organization, dedicated to eliminating injuries and developing a holistic
culture of safety through community-based programs. The Foundation promotes a goal of zero tolerance for all injuries, and its mission is to make Canada the safest country in the world to live, work and play.
Since its inception in 1996, the Safe Communities Foundation has developed a results-driven, innovative safe communities program that gives Canadian communities the tools to reduce local injuries in the workplace, home and recreational areas. We facilitate cross-sectoral cooperation to reduce injuries and it is producing quantifiable results.
For years the approach to injury prevention has been a numbers-driven exercise focused on data collection and interpretation. Data alone does not promote attitudinal change toward injury prevention and cannot measure a program’s overall impact. We teach
people the necessity of adding passion to the data by participating in a local safe communities coalition. The Foundation works with these coalitions to identify, reduce and eventually eliminate their communities’ most prevalent injuries. The coalitions target these injuries within a result-oriented business plan that sets achievable, measurable and sustainable goals.
