This project restored Edmonton's historical Gibson Block building and created a new home for the Women's Emergency Accommodation Centre. Led by the Gibson Block Action Committee the community worked to save the Gibson Block, an important architectural resource, and to build a much-needed new shelter for Edmonton's homeless women.
The Women's Emergency Accommodation Centre (WEAC) offers short-term emergency housing to homeless and transient women who have little or no income. The Gibson Block Restoration represented the realization of two different but complementary goals: 1) improved accommodation for homeless women in Edmonton's inner city 2) the restoration of a historical building.
