Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) is the national membership organization of Canada’s 104 community foundations. CFC’s mission is to enhance the quality of life and vitality in Canadian communities by supporting and promoting the fund development, grant making and leadership of community foundations.
Our Millennium is a national initiative, that, to date has engaged nearly 4 million Canadians to work with others on almost 4,000 special projects that are making our communities stronger. Our Millennium involves a network of over 90 local coordinating committees; voluntary sector, corporate and government partnerships; an extensive promotional campaign; and a national "millennium gift" registry.
In response to their rapid growth in the 1980’s and early 90’s Canada’s community foundations incorporated Community Foundations of Canada (CFC), a national membership organization in 1992. United by a national structure, the movement has flourished: the number of community foundations has tripled to 102, and their assets have reached over $1.2 billion. In 1999 Canada’s community foundations granted more than $62 million to local charities across the country.
Community foundations are in the community-building business. They mobilize a community’s charitable assets for the long-term good of the community by attracting and managing permanent charitable endowment funds, making grants from the earnings of those funds, and providing leadership to address local issues.
CFC plays an important role in encouraging the development of both established and emerging community foundations through information, technical assistance, special programs, training and networking. CFC’s strategic goals are:
-To provide support for member community foundations
-To promote the community foundation movement
-To demonstrate philanthropic leadership in Canada
-To build the effectiveness and efficiency of CFC.
The "Our Millennium" program has been a unique opportunity to address all of these goals.
